“LMCT” stands for “Licenced Motor Car Trader”, the official designation used in Victoria.
According to Consumer Affairs Victoria, generally if you deal in four or more cars per year, you need a licence — and in some circumstances a licence is required for fewer than four.
If you don’t hold a licence while carrying on a business of trading in motor cars, you may be subject to a criminal penalty. You can be deemed to be trading even if you don’t think you are — the burden of proof is on you to show otherwise. See exceptions here.
The LMCT application process requires reams of paperwork within a short lodgement window. As registered Tax Agents and Public Accountants, we prepare your documents, financials, business plan and structure, certify your ID, follow up with the Authority, and get you ready for the compliance test — end to end.
After submission, the wait is typically a few weeks to a few months, depending on whether the Authority needs to scrutinise your application further. A properly completed application doesn’t guarantee a short turnaround, but it does move the odds in your favour — and you can’t trade until you’re certified.
Commonly requested items include identification, bank statements, a lease agreement, a business plan and cash flow forecast, consent to a national criminal history check, and trust or indemnity documentation where relevant. We confirm your exact list at the start of the engagement.

Delays are most often caused by missing documents or figures that don’t hold up to scrutiny. We check every element before lodgement to avoid rejections, and follow up directly if the Authority comes back with a query.
